In most families, a father is very protective of his daughter, and who she is involved with. This is especially true if said daughter is already dating.
But that was not the case with Lief. He knew the boy his beloved daughter Karen was dating was trustworthy.
He also knew that his daughter would never go off somewhere alone without his permission. If he deemed a location unsuitable for Karen by herself, he would deny her going.
But Karen's boyfriend Arvid was a good boy. Lief knew that. Arvid's brother Edvin was also able to be trusted.
When Lief was at work, he could count on both boys to watch his children.
So when Karen requested that she spend the night at Arvid's house, Lief was all to happy to let her:
---
"I'll have to ask my dad," Leif's eldest Karen said into her phone.
"Ask me what, honey?" Lief asked, coming into the door. Having been recently promoted, he was feeling quite good about himself.
And like most teenage girls, Karen was always wishing to spend time with her beloved boyfriend.
"Hi, dad," she said as she hung up after saying goodbye. She knew the rules as well as her father.
"Can I spend the night at Arvid's house?" A simple enough request, though Lief had to unfortunately ask her the embarrassing questions anyway.
"Are you going to get to school on time tomorrow morning?" Karen said she would. "Are you going to call in case something goes wrong?" Again, his daughter responded in the affirmative.
"I don't see why not, then." His answer made Karen happy as a lark. After hugging her father, off she went to her boyfriend's house.
And how delighted Arvid was when she arrived.
Arvid and his twin brother were always glad to see Karen, whether her visits were planned or not.
Of course, on this occasion, not much fun was had, seeing as their main source of entertainment was, well, not quite working.
Arvid's twin Edvin even stated outright, "TV's broke." So, the three teenagers had to find other ways to amuse themselves.
Or at least, help out with each other's homework.
---
After the night became more prominent, Arvid and Edvin had gone to bed early.
Karen herself had taken the couch, but since it was still early according to her, she called up her father's house to see if anything was out of sorts.
But no. Lief was happy to report that all was well back at her house.
Her half-brother Karl had finished his homework and was imagining himself as Godzilla.
Karen had giggled at this statement. She was always amused at Karl's declarations of "eating" everyone when he wore that outfit.
As for her half-sister Kristin, Lief made sure to keep an eye on her.
Though young, Kristin did have a penchant for getting into trouble. Thankfully, her father kept an eye on her.
Then came the rest of the arrangements. Lief promised that he would let Karen stay at Arvid and Edvin's until he finished work.
By then, he would swing by and take Karen home.
Of course, there was no guarantee that he wasn't going to shoot the breeze with the boys. There was always a chance of that happening.
But what neither of them expected, was Lief's good fortune on this particular trip.
(End of Chapter 1.)
Yay it's cool that Leif is trusting of Karen.
