To say Karen was displeased with her father's decision to marry Josefin would be a severe understatement.
Indeed, her worst fears were becoming reality.
Karen was unsure how to show her father how upset she was with this turn of events. She had an idea, though.
All she hoped was that she would not be caught.
Quietly, Karen got dressed and left her room. She made sure to be as silent as she could, since she didn't want to wake Arvid or Edvin.
Karen wasn't worried about her father or Josefin waking up. It was good for their room to be downstairs.
What puzzled Karen was that when she went to check on Kristin, the baby was awake.
It could have been Kristin had a feeling that something was going on. Or perhaps she didn't want to take her nap.
"Kristin, you're supposed to be asleep," Karen whispered. Kristin simply continued babbling happily.
It actually didn't matter to Karen whether or not her little sister was awake. If anything, this made things easier.
"Can you keep a secret, Kristin?" Karen didn't need an answer from her. She already knew what it was.
"Big sister is going to go away for a while. Be good, all right?"
Kristin didn't say a coherent answer, but the noise she made almost seemed to be one of protest.
It honestly hurt Karen to hear it. If she could, she'd take her baby sister with her. But she didn't want the repercussions of her actions to spread to anyone else besides her.
No, this time, Karen was acting by herself.
The teen was very well aware that what she was doing was foolish. But at this point, she would act now, think later. Her anger and disappointment towards Lief outweighed any rational thinking.
Karen made sure no one else besides her and Kristin were awake. She then took one last look at her house.
And then, she turned and ran off into the snowy night.
(End of Chapter 19.)
